MIcro- and NAno-Plastics in AGRIcultural Soils: Sources, environmental fate and impacts on ecosystem services and overall sustainability
Plastic use in agriculture leads to soil contamination with micro- and nano-plastics (MNP) from various sources, including contaminated fertilizers. These plastics can be ingested by organisms and affect plant systems. Studies show MNPs accumulate in soil, altering properties and functions like water dynamics and nutrient cycling, impacting soil biodiversity and farm economics. The presence of other pollutants may exacerbate these effects, creating complex environmental challenges.
Minagris aims to understand the harmful impacts of plastic debris on soil biodiversity, functions, ecosystem services, agricultural productivity, and socio-economic outcomes at the farm level.

Papillons is a research project supported by the European Commission. We study the sources, behaviour and ecological effects of micro and nanoplastics in agricultural soils, resulting from the use of agricultural plastics. 20 universities and research institutions from 12 countries will jointly investigate the sustainability of plastic use in European agriculture. The focus is on the input of plastic particles and chemical additives into arable land, and their possible ecological and socio-economic effects.
The mission of PAPILLONS is toĀ deliver knowledge and help farmers, industries, regulators andĀ policy makers to introduce practices, products and instruments that guarantee the safe use of agricultural plastics and promote the sustainability of farming systems.
